I came from Bamberg, Germany. I was stationed in Rivers Barracks twice. Got to C, Btry, 2nd Bn. 92nd Arty in Jan 1961. Ended up in B Btry in Special Weapons, and left about Sep 62. Came back March 1965. Help start Bn. PLL Section. was in Svc. Btry then. Left for Nam in Nov 1967.
I see they changed from closed turret to open turret sometime in the 70's I guess. My mailman (don't know his name) was in the 92nd sometime around '85, '86, '87 I believe.
When I was a cannon cocker I ended up as a Gunner before I got out in 1962. Was in Graf when a unit shot a round into an Armor Troop in tent city killing around 16 or 17 guys. That was when I was with the 80th Arty in Bamberg though,
In Graf we stayed in the barracks in Velsek most of the time.
Use to go to Florida Bar, Europa Bar, Expresshalle, Meinser Bar Modern Bar, Bier Bar, Belamy Bar (in the "Impact Area"), and a few others I no longer remember the names of.
I see pictures of how Rivers Barracks has changed, and saw a highway running along side of it called Giessener Ring.
Up until today I thought that was a castle that was behind and down a trail a ways from Rivers Barracks. Found out today it was a monastery called Schiffenberg Ship Mountain. Use to go there in summer and drink and sings with the Germans. Had a lots of fun.
I remember stopping in front of the opera house to get sausages and chicken soup before going back to the barracks for bed check. I still love those sausages.
I had some of my best times in Rivers Barracks. I'll never forget it there.
Thank you Mrs. Ortega for starting this website.
