I was 18 yrs old and wasn't quite sure what to think of life at Rivers (the zoo). While I was there, the 6/9th was changed to 5/3rd FA. I spent most of my time talking about getting the heck out of there! The Army life didn't sit well with me... it seems a lot of us just wanted to go back home. That was probably a foolish perspective. I (we) should have taken advantage of the situation and appreciated the place and that area of Germany instead of just drinking and listening to American music. Some guys did seem to be involved in various tours and other ways of taking in the local atmosphere....guess I didn't "get it"....too young and dumb! I was in the Service Battery and spent much of the time as the captain's driver. During my stay, my jeep was being traded in for a Hummer....C-rations were phased out and MRE's replaced them, and our steel pot helmets were exchanged for the new Kevlar model. I think I have some pictures of my time at Rivers that I can post later. Actually, if anyone happens to have accessed that pointy bomb shelter beside my building...you may have noticed a blue trunk with my name on it. In it, there are a large number of photographs that I took at Rivers... I simply forgot that darn thing in my excitement to leave! We used that shelter as a storage facility.

Kelton, It's amazing that it was still called the Zoo when you were there. I think that name was coined in the 1960's. I was there from 76 to 79. The pointy things are Winkle Towers. I got to go in one. At that time we stored "classified" stuff in the one behind HQ. Did you ever go in the concrete "houses" while you were there? I have some photos I need to post as well. I think I'll look for them right now! Regards, Dave

I was shop foreman in service battery maintenance. Were you the bc's driver? I think I might remember you . Do you remember the buildings behind bn headquarters, that were flooded to keep gi's from going inside? How about the old clay buildings with the bullet holes? Were you there when col Pete was bn commander?

I guess I never checked back on this forum after my post... a year ago!
Yes, I was the BC (Captain's) driver for a bit...I can't remember how long I lasted. I was a horrible driver... being 18 and having never driven a stick. That darn jeep was incredibly unforgiving to my bad shifting technique. I did it for maybe six months.
"Pete"...that sounds familiar... was he a Lt.Col.?
Were you in Service Battery?

Oh... I just re-read your post.
Shop foreman? Then I would probably remember you.
I didn't know how the motorpool operated or what each mechanic-type was doing there... so I may not have known you as the foreman, but I would definitely recognize you.
I suppose my most familiar mechanic friend was probably Sgt. Valverde. There were a couple of guys there... Smith? (tall blonde Sgt.)...and Wrenshaw (a serious slacker!...not that I was any better) who gave me a hard time. I did some stupid sh** when I first met them, so that didn't help!
I've got some pics of guys that, I think, were mechanics at the time.

kelton, I remember you driving cpt pickard around, the Smith you remember was probably Pete smith a wrecker operator in Bn maint. Sultini and Smith were the wrecker operators . I took Valverde's place in btry maint and he went over to hq btry maint because they needed an e5. I seem to remember you and Krohn were buds. who was this Wrenshaw? was he a ammo truck driver? Lee replaced you as bc driver didn't he? How about that guy Purcell who got burnt lighting powder bags, we called him flash after that. later, Dave Hart

Hey does anyone remember that guy in the 92nd who was killed in the motor pool 84-87. We were on the other side of the fence in five turds. We couldn't tell what was going on over there. We were told he was taking off a hydraulic line when the pack sling broke and crushed him. Any truth to this. Man was the rivalry bad back then. Does anybody remember calling mini car charlie to go downtown? How about that walk to pendleton or depot. It seems like a hundred years ago now.Later Hartman
