When did Rivers Barracks pick up the name THE ZOO. I was there all of 1959 and 1960 and never heard it called that, although it may have qualified for it. Just wondering !!

Mr Farmall, I was at Rivers from 84-87 and was told the reason it was called the zoo was because if you looked at the tops of the fences, the part that held the barb wire was turned inward. This was done not to keep people from getting in but to keep people from getting out. I don't remember anyone else saying any different concerning this. I was in circus [svc] btry 5/3rd FA. [formerly 6/9th FA]. This was the infamous btry where they pushed the Lt out the top floor window locked in a wall locker.Wild times at a wild place back then, You literally took your life in your own hands if you walked across the quad at night. DAVE,
YOU YOUNG PUPS MUST HAVE SEVERELY DAMAGED THE PERFECT REPUTATION OF THE MOST PERFECT MILITARY INSTALLATION IN ALL OF EUROPE AFTER I LEFT IT IN YOUR CARE, SHAME ON Y'ALL! I NEVER HEARD THE ZOO THING EITHER AND I LEFT IN EARLY 1970 EVEN THOUGH IT WAS WELL QUALIFIED FOR THE TITLE. YOU NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT THE LT GETTING SHOVED OUT OF THE WINDOW EITHER, SOUNDS LIKE I LEFT TOO SOON. WE HAD AN LT GET CUT AND SHOT AT AND MISSED AT CAMP NORMANDY WHEN WE WERE IN GRAF ONE YEAR. WE HAD AN ALL OUT WAR WITH ANOTHER OUTFIT.
SEVERAL OF US WERE ATTACKED ON THE QUADRANGLE AT RIVERS IN THE SUMMER OF '68, I WOUND UP IN BED FOR A FEW DAYS AFTER THAT, SEEMS LIKE SOME PEOPLE DID SOME "DISORDERLY DRILL" ON MY BACK AND RIBS FOR A WHILE. FOR SOME REASON I THINK THEY BELIEVED THAT I PERSONALLY SHOT MARTIN LUTHER KING.
HAVEN'T HEARD FROM YOU FOR A WHILE. SEND ME AN EMAIL WHEN YOU GET A CHANCE
RICK

Hey Rick, Those were some wild times at a wild place during the 80's. The baader meinhof gang was in full swing along with the red army faction. I remember a bombing inside depot and a disco getting bombed in frankfurt during that time. They sent us to Graf pretty often and if we weren't in graf it was either Hohenfeld or wildchicken. I remember all of the camps in Graf, Kasserine,Normandy,Algiers. How about the Stab and Jab? Sweatty Betty? Man those were good times. I couldn't wait to get back to the rear, once back in giessen I couldn't wait to go back to Graf . Weird. Being in the FRG was what real soldiering was all about. Stateside duty was all show and no go. Later, Hartman

Oh yeh we called it the zoo back than too. It was because the tops of the fences were pointed inward . that was the reason I always heard anyways.

Hey whitedog, what is this "reactionary force" everyone talks about? Was this something the gun btry's had to do? I remember people talking about "red cycle" but the only thing I saw was the motor pool[being a 63B]. Since we were mechanics we had no Px guard duty, just plenty of hours spent getting all deadlined vehicles up and making sure all parts were ordered for the ones that were down. I remember many a hour under a deuce and a half and 5 ton replacing a hydrovac or working off gigs from a 2404,or helping pull a pack on a gun. Man those were the days. The world was not so crazy back then or we were too young to realize it. We had a saying back then,"Beat it to fit, paint it to match!" "Mission First,People Always" Later Dave

It's called The Zoo because of all the Animals that lived there.
Forget the Fence Theory, all of them pointed in at every post I went to as a duty driver.

the Zoo...served in Rivers from Sept 67 to March 70 and never heard that term. yeah the MLK shooting left the white guys vunerable for attacks...especially the bathroom at the rondezvous..chicken nuts mothers.....we had nothing to do with it.....and they wonder why there's so much hate in the world...the fences..hmmmm never really noticed them.....we didn't normaly have groups attacking anyone in the Quadrangle.....but we did have one or two lunatics amongst us who when they drank got a little violent....George (The Governor) Wallace and an Alaskan Eskimo who's name I have forgotten......d**n Jack Daniel's....and George Teasley...all of C battery 68-69.....always beating on or wanting to beat on someone....and the military is more worried about the gay factions?.........

I believe it was because of the rampant drug use in the 70's, from what i was told
